![It's supposed to be unsettling.
It's not normal and it doesn't feel right to have all of the statues- even the crucifix- covered in that deep purple cloth.
But it's not because the statues are bad, it's because our focus has shifted.
In the last two weeks of Lent, known as Passiontide, the liturgical and scriptural focus of the Church shifts to Christ's Passion and suffering.
It also recalls the part of the Gospel of John where it's said, "...Jesus no longer walked about openly among the Jews. He withdrew to a town called Ephraim[a] in the region bordering the desert, and he remained there with the disciples." (John 11:54)
He was hidden- veiled from the world- and no longer appeared publicly before His Passion.
And so we veil statues- images depicting Christ Himself and members of His Church- to help us meditate solely on the Passion of Christ.
Statues of the Saints and of our Blessed Mother are veiled as well as Crucifixes, because when Jesus hid Himself and withdrew to Ephraim, He went WITH the disciples. And who are the Saints but disciples of Christ?!
This practice is striking and brings us deeper in to the penitential preparatory time of Lent as we lead up to the Triduum and meditate on Christ's Passion and death and makes us long to see His face all the more 🤍
